What is Asian Blepharoplasty?

Anatomical differences between Western and Eastern eyelids. Asian blepharoplasty is upper eyelid surgery for Asian patients who wish to soften their Eastern features. It is also known as double eyelid surgery . This surgery is different from upper blepharoplasty because, since there is no excess skin, no subcutaneous tissue is removed (or only a very small amount is removed).

What are the characteristics of Asian blepharoplasty?

Many people of Asian descent have an upper eyelid without a crease, a distinguishing feature known as “one eyelid.” The size, shape, and area of the eye and nose differ from those of Westerners, and for this reason, this type of surgery must be performed by a specialized surgeon. Through Asian blepharoplasty, the surgeon will create a crease in this eyelid using a simple and quick plastic surgery procedure. To achieve this, this procedure must be performed by someone who knows exactly where to make the incisions, how much tissue and fat to remove, and where to position the crease. In Asian eyelids, the eyelid crease is located at a lower point (closer to the eyelashes) compared to Western eyelids. The height of the eyelid crease determines the height and depth of the upper eyelid sulcus. When we have a low crease, the skin hangs from a lower point, and orbital fat prolapses more externally. Therefore, these eyelids, in addition to being more covered by skin, appear “fuller.” Sometimes the fold is even absent, so that the skin of the eyelid rests on top of the eyelashes without any anchor point.

Who is Asian blepharoplasty for?

The patient with more pronounced Asian features is usually the one who seeks this type of surgery, and they are usually women under 30. It is important to emphasize that the Asian patient is not looking for a Western eyelid, but rather wants to soften their features while maintaining their Oriental identity. Asian blepharoplasty softens the patient’s eyelids, not equating them with Western features, but rather softens the racial features of their gaze, where the slanted eye is less pronounced.

What is recovery like and what are the results?

Asian blepharoplasty has been practiced since the 1800s, and surgical techniques have advanced so much since then that today, Asian surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia , allowing the patient to return home the same day. During the first week after Asian blepharoplasty, the care and discomfort are similar to those of other eyelid surgeries. . Swelling, bruising, and some discoloration may occur. during the first few days; but following the surgeon’s instructions, this discomfort will disappear within a few days, as the blood circulates through that area normally and it regains proper mobility. And except in extreme cases, it does not involve any type of pain. Due to this postoperative recovery , we cannot assess the results immediately . During the first few days, it is also possible that the new fold appears higher than expected, but this is part of the process . After one or two months, the fold will already be completely accommodated in the desired position. Furthermore, the incisions will always be hidden , as in any other upper blepharoplasty, so they are concealed in the fold itself. If you are looking for a specialist in this aesthetic intervention, Dr. José Nieto is one of the most prestigious surgeons in Spain and is dedicated exclusively to Oculoplastic Surgery, with extensive experience in Asian blepharoplasty cases. He combines his work in reconstructive surgery in the public sector with his private reconstructive and cosmetic practice, which allows him to be in daily contact with different patients and at the forefront of the latest advances.

What does Asian blepharoplasty surgery involve?

As we have already mentioned, Asian double eyelid surgery is a specialized but relatively simple and minimally invasive procedure that allows for the modification of the “torn” appearance of the upper eyelids. The procedure is similar to upper blepharoplasty, but they should not be confused. Asian surgery essentially consists of creating a fold at a higher level than the existing one, so that the skin is more retracted and a slight groove is formed that allows a small amount of eyelid to be seen above the eyelashes. To achieve this, the skin must be anchored to the levator muscle by means of sutures. Occasionally, it is also necessary to remove part of the upper eyelid fat pad.
