What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin is a medication that, when injected in small doses into certain facial muscles, improves expression lines and changes muscle dynamics, giving us a more relaxed and rested appearance. It is a safe medication whose first application in medicine was in the treatment of involuntary muscle spasms such as blepharospasm. Its benefits in cosmetics were later discovered, and it is currently the most widely used substance in non-surgical facial rejuvenation .
Treatment with botulinum toxin
During your first visit, Dr. Nieto will evaluate your treatment options based on your individual characteristics and preferences. Botulinum toxin works especially well on three main areas: the forehead, the area between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet.
The goal of treatment is not a “frozen” or paralyzed face, but rather a more relaxed one. The toxin treatment is performed in the office after applying an anesthetic cream to make the treatment more pleasant. It takes 5-10 minutes to apply, and the effect appears within 3-5 days.
Treatment lasts 4-6 months, after which it must be repeated to maintain the effect, although lower doses are often required with repeat treatments. Complications from botulinum toxin treatment are rare and always temporary, as the drug’s effect is transient.
