Can you have surgery in the summer?

Although colder seasons have traditionally been considered the best time to undergo surgery such as blepharoplasty, many patients choose to have it done in the summer.

The reason is that this is the only time of the year when they have 2, 3 or 4 weeks off to properly recover and return to work without any signs of the intervention .

Having surgery in the summer isn’t a problem , but the patient must commit to protecting the operated areas from sunlight. This doesn’t mean they can’t be outdoors or go to the beach, but they should be extra careful and wear sunglasses.

It’s important to distinguish between surgeries that involve a scar and those that don’t. Lower blepharoplasties performed transconjunctivally don’t have an external cut that requires sun protection, but it’s still recommended that you protect the area while there is swelling or bruising, as the skin may become pigmented.

This should be done with physical measures (sunglasses, hats) and chemical measures (sunscreen). This period of increased protection should last 10-14 days, depending on the case, and the area should then be protected as normal.

In the case of surgeries that involve a scar, such as upper blepharoplasty or some lower blepharoplasties, scar protection with the aforementioned measures should continue throughout the summer to promote optimal healing. Patients may go to the beach two weeks later, but should wear protective clothing. The surgical area should not be soaked in a pool or seawater for two weeks after the procedure.
