Botulinum toxin is a medication that injected in small doses over certain facial muscles produces an improvement in expression wrinkles and changes muscle dynamics, giving us a more relaxed and rested appearance. It is a safe drug whose first application in medicine was in the treatment of involuntary muscle spasms such as blepharospasm. Later its benefits were discovered in cosmetics and nowadays it is the most used substance in facial rejuvenation without surgery.
During the first visit, Dr. Nieto will evaluate your treatment possibilities according to your individual characteristics and preferences. There are basically three areas where botulinum toxin works particularly well: forehead, frown and crow’s feet. The goal of the treatment is not a “frozen” or paralyzed face, but a more relaxed face. The treatment with toxin is done in the office after applying an anesthetic cream to make the treatment more pleasant. It is applied in 5-10 minutes and the effect appears after 3-5 days. The duration of the treatment is 4-6 months, after which the treatment must be repeated to maintain the effect although fewer doses are often needed in re-treatments. Complications of botulinum toxin treatment are infrequent and always temporary, as the effect of the drug is temporary.
