What is pterygium?

A pterygium is an abnormal growth of the conjunctiva over the cornea. It is one of the most common and well-known eye conditions. This benign condition usually appears on the inner side of the eye, on the nasal side, but can also appear on the other side. This phenomenon can cause irritation and vision problems . When it grows and invades the pupil, surgery is required. It rarely affects both eyes.

What are the symptoms of a patient with Pterygium?

Patients with pterygium often come to our clinic because they have a white or yellowish, sometimes bulging, tissue in the eye. It sometimes presents as a chronic reddening of the conjunctiva, with eye irritation and itching. As it grows over the cornea, it can affect the visual axis (the pupil). Even in cases where it doesn’t affect the pupil, it can cause astigmatism by deforming the cornea.

Pterygium has several stages. In its earliest stages, it’s usually asymptomatic, although in its later stages, we’ll notice it growing toward the cornea, appearing swollen and possibly reaching the central area.

Other symptoms may include eye watering, a sensation of grit or a foreign body.

What is Pterygium surgery like?

It involves removing the pterygium, which is simply a portion of diseased conjunctiva, and replacing it with healthy conjunctival tissue (conjunctival autograft). This healthy tissue is obtained from the patient himself, harvested from the upper conjunctiva, where it is always healthy and abundant. The healthy tissue is literally “glued” to the area where the pterygium was, using a fibrin-based biological glue. This eliminates the need for stitches, which are always uncomfortable on the ocular surface, and achieves rapid recovery and a normal appearance of the eye in a very short time.

If you want to remove the Pterygium, do not hesitate to consult with us.

How to treat pterygium in the eyes

Except in cases where no growth is detected, pterygium surgery is generally recommended. Surgical treatment of pterygium has improved significantly in recent years due to the application of a new technique.
